North Carolina CDL Training: What it takes to stay compliant.
If you operate a CDL training program in North Carolina, whether you're a CDL school, a community college, a government agency, or a private carrier training your own drivers, compliance isn't just about training well.
North Carolina requires a 160-hour minimum training course for licensed schools, on top of the federal ELDT baseline. PowerSuite tracks every required hour and keeps the daily logs audit-ready.
In North Carolina, that usually means understanding two layers of rules:
- FMCSA ELDT + Training Provider Registry (TPR) (the federal baseline for entry-level drivers), and
- NCDMV Commercial Driver Training School rules: state licensing and oversight of licensed, tuition-charging commercial driver training schools and instructors under Article 14, Chapter 20 of the NC General Statutes. (Public colleges/universities/high schools and employer-run in-house programs are generally exempt from this state school license; the federal ELDT/TPR layer still applies to all.)
